Comey: Trump is a Liar
In a stunning testimony before the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee, former FBI Director James Comey said President Donald Trump lied about him.
He said he began keeping notes of his meetings with the president because he was afraid the president will “lie about him” and their conversations.
That is an explosive thing to say about the President of the United States.
Comey said the rationale the president and White House offered for his firing kept changing and that concerned him greatly as did the Trump administration’s statements saying the FBI was in disarray.
“The administration chose to defame me and, more importantly, the FBI by saying that the organization was in disarray, that it was poorly run,” Comey told the Senate committee.
The former FBI director said those were lies.
“Those were lies, plain and simple.”
Comey said he hoped there were tapes detailing his meeting with Trump, as the president said earlier.
“Lordy, I hope there are tapes,” he said.
He said he decided to leak the details of his meeting with the president in the Oval Office through a friend to prompt the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election.
“My judgment was, I needed to get that out into the public square, and so I asked a friend of mine to share the content of the memo with a reporter. … I asked him to because I thought that might prompt the appointment of a special counsel,” Comey told the committee.
Columbia University law professor Daniel Richman later confirmed to the media that he was the Comey friend who leaked the memos to the media.
Comey also confirmed that in his meeting with President Trump in February, he was told to drop the Michael Flynn investigation by Trump.
‘I hope you can let this go,” he confirmed the president told him.
