Trump, Allies go after Special Counsel Mueller for Obstruction of Justice Probe

Special Counsel Robert Mueller and U.S. President Donald Trump

Following media reports that Special Counsel Robert Mueller III is investigating President Donald Trump for obstruction of justice, the president has unleashed his attack dogs on him.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Mueller is slated to interview key officials including Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats, National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers and former deputy NSA director Richard Ledgett.

Earlier this week Trump’s friend, Chris Ruddy, the CEO of conservative news website Newsmax, told PBS that President Trump is seriously considering firing Mueller, a move experts believe will be catastrophic for the president.

Trump praised the appointment of Mueller last month calling him a man of integrity but all that soon changed with the president denouncing the probe on Twitter. He called it the “the single greatest witch hunt in American political history.”

In addition to the obstruction of justice probe, Mueller is looking at Trump’s relationship with Russia, the role his campaign associates played, if any, in the hacking of Democratic National Committee during the 2016 presidential elections and whether they cooperated with the Russians.

He is also looking into former security adviser MIke Flynn’s relationship with the Russians. Flynn, who was fired by President Trump earlier has offered to testify under oath if offered immunity from prosecution.

Following Trump’s lead, his allies including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich have gone on Twitter to assassinate Mueller’s character.

Gingrich called Special Counsel Mueller the “anti-Trump special counsel.”

Just last month Gingrich called Mueller “a superb choice to be special counsel.”

“His reputation is impeccable for honesty and integrity. Media should now calm down,” Gingrich said about Mueller last month.

Changing his tune, Gingrich said this week that Republicans are delusional if they think Mueller is going to be fair to the president.

“Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair. Look who he is hiring,” Gingrich tweeted earlier this week.

Counselor to President Trump Kellyanne Conway also questioned Mueller’s independence in one of tweets for hiring prosecutors who had donated to Democrats in the past.
