70% of Independent Voters Say Trump is Doing a Poor Job

NPR poll - Independents sour on Donald Trump

President Donald Trump’s approval ratings among Independent voters has taken a huge nosedive. More Americans say the country is on the wrong track.

An astonishing 70 percent of voters who identify themselves as Independent say they disapprove of the way the president is handling his job, according to the latest NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.

That is a drop of nearly 18 percent from when the president first took office a few months ago.

Overall, only 37 percent of Americans approve of the job he is doing while 51 percent disapprove.

Nearly half of all Americans strongly disapprove of Trump’s performance in office so far. That is double the 20 percent of those who strongly support and approve of the president’s performance.

A full 85 percent of Democrats either strongly disapprove or disapprove while 86 percent of Liberal or Very liberal Americans believe Trump is doing a poor job.

Among the issues of great concern to Independents and Democrats is the economy and that is despite the nearly full national employment.

Poll-Independents Sour on Trump

According to pollsters, “just 31 percent of independents say they have confidence in Trump’s ability to improve the U.S. economy, while 49 percent doubt he can do so.”

At the end of March, 44 percent of those polled said they thought President Trump could turn around the economy, while 38 percent didn’t.

That amounts to an amazing 24-point swing in three months.

Lee Miringoff, the Director of Marist College Institute for Public Opinion said the swing should be a warning sign to the White House that something is off.

“Independents were certainly willing to give Trump the benefit of the doubt when he entered office. But on issues like the direction of the country and the economy, they’ve really soured on him. It’s hard for someone like him to make a second impression. Independents have come to the conclusion that what you see is what you get,” he said.

Perhaps the good news from the poll is that Trump’s core base, the White non-college educated voters who voted overwhelmingly for him in 2016 have not abandoned him, yet.

Eighty percent of Republicans still approve of the president’s performance. This includes about 91% who consider themselves Strong Republicans.

Trump still has an 89% approval among those Americans who voted for him and a 65 percent approval rating among white evangelical Christians, according to poll results. 65 percent of white evangelical Christians however, disapprove of the job he is doing.

The number of Americans who feel the country is on the wrong track has doubled since February. 61 percent say the country is moving the wrong way compared to 31 percent who say it is on the right track.
