Dissecting Tomi Lahren’s Commentary on Trump’s Transgender Military Ban
Popular Republican Party commentator Tomi Lahren recently shared a home video defending President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to ban transgender individuals from serving in any capacity in the U.S. military.
In her video, Lahren makes several points to explain why this decision was deemed ‘necessary’ for improvement of the military.
Well, sorry Tomi, but I, along with many others, disagree with your points.
In her video (below) Lahren states that “the military is not a social experiment,” and ultimately asserts that allowing trans individuals to serve caters to “feelings and political correctness.” While this may be agreeable for some, Lahren is ignoring the resounding fact that trans individuals want to serve in the military for the very same reasons as non-trans individuals; to fight for their country.
One of the main points in this ever-growing debate focuses on the economical side of the argument. Lahren brings up the point of concern that taxpayers’ money is funding the hormone treatment and gender-reassignment procedures in the military.
Let’s break that down a little further.
Findings from a recent study by RAND Corporation determined that total costs from all gender-reassignment surgeries in the military would be minimal.
At an estimated number of 2,450 transgender members in the active component of the military, an even smaller portion of that number will likely seek gender-related therapies and treatment.
Based on these numbers, the total annual costs for surgeries, therapies and treatments for transgender personnel would range anywhere from $2.4 million to $8.4 million. Those costs would represent only .04-0.13% of the current $6.2 billion military healthcare budget. Multiple other studies also generated similar results and numbers.
If those numbers are still not enough to convince you, maybe the fact that the military spends $84 million annually on Viagra might change your mind. Or $80 million on golf courses.
Lahren goes on to denounce President Obama for his decision to “cater to feelings” by allowing transgender individuals to serve openly. In addition, during his presidency Obama announced that the Pentagon would cover all costs for gender-reassignment surgeries and procedures.
Lahren also briefly mentions the extremely high suicide rate among the transgender service members in the military, as well as the generally high suicide rate among all members. It would only seem logical that this suicide rate is so high in part due to the negative attitude that our own President has continued to perpetuate.
The one key point at the end of the day is that Trump’s Twitter banter has little, to no legal backing. According to Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution, the legal authority presiding over decisions on who can serve is allocated to Congress.
At a Politicon event, Lahren spoke with Chelsea Handler, a Liberal comedian, about their opposing views on President Trump and the trans military ban. Handler said it best: “The trans community isn’t going away. It’s only gonna get bigger. This is 2017.”
