New Poll: 40% of Americans Want Trump Impeached and Removed from Office

40 percent wants U.S. President Donald Trump impeached

Support for impeaching Donald Trump has increased significantly in the last six months, according to a survey released by the Public Religion Research Institute, PRRI.



Four in ten Americans (40%) now believe the president should be impeached and removed from office, a ten percent jump from the number of Americans who expressed the same sentiment in February.

53% of respondents s say the president should not be impeached but that is a significant drop compared to the 65% who expressed the same sentiment in February.

Trump impeachment by gender

The shift in attitude is mostly coming from Democrats. 72% of Democrats say they now favor impeaching Trump compared to 53% who felt this way in February.

For Republicans, their feelings have remained largely the same. Only seven percent believe Trump should be impeached and removed from office. That is a jump of three percentage points compared to the 4% who said so in February. Majority of Republicans say they are against impeachment.

47% of women believe the president should be impeached while 45% feel otherwise.




31% of whites, 27% of whites with no college degree and 39% of whites with college degree say he should be impeached.

A majority of blacks and Hispanics say he should be impeached. More than seven in ten Blacks (72%) and 53% of Hispanics want Trump impeached and removed from office.

On whether they think Trump has violated the U.S. constitution, nearly half agree that he has while a near identical number disagrees.




According to PRRI, more than eight in ten (85%) Republicans reject the notion that Trump violated the Constitution, while nearly eight in ten (78%) Democrats say he has.

Young adults are far more likely than seniors to believe Trump violated the Constitution. Nearly six in ten (59%) young adults, compared to about four in ten (41%) seniors, believe Trump’s actions violated the Constitution.
