Ellen DeGeneres says Trump is Unwelcome on ‘The Ellen Show’

Ellen Degeneres, host of The Ellen Show

In a recent interview with journalist Megyn Kelly, Ellen DeGeneres made her standpoint on President Trump crystal clear: the president is unwelcome on her talk show.

Kelly’s fame skyrocketed during the first Republican presidential debate in August 2015 when she confronted Trump by saying, “You’ve called women you don’t like fat pigs, dogs, slobs and disgusting animals.”

Trump later fired back with a tweet saying that Kelly “really bombed tonight” before he criticized Kelly on CNN by claiming, “There was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her wherever.”

Kelly took full advantage of the sudden media attention by choosing to leave her position as FOX News host, publishing a book in November 2016, and on September 25 she will have Megyn Kelly Today as the new third hour of NBC’s daily talk show.

During her press tour for the new morning show Kelly stopped by DeGeneres’ show and was met with the contentious question – “Would you have [President Trump] on your show?” – from the famously liberal comedian.

Without hesitation Kelly responded, “Definitely. I mean, I would not say no to the sitting president of the United States.”

“Really?” DeGeneres pressed.

“Absolutely not! Would you?” Kelly, seeming genuinely shocked by DeGeneres’ response, immediately reacted.

“Yeah.” DeGeneres deadpanned.

“You would?” Kelly laughed as the audience erupted into applause.

“I would not have him on the show,” DeGeneres continued before having to break, to more applause, “I mean look… He is who he is and he gets enough attention and he has his Twitter account and he has ways to get his message across.”

Kelly nodded politely throughout DeGeneres’ response as she explained further.

“There’s nothing I’m going to say to him that’s going to change him and I don’t want to give him a platform, because it just validates him,” DeGeneres continued. “And for me to have someone on the show, I have to at least admire them in some way. And I can’t have someone that I feel is not only dangerous for the country, and for me personally as a gay woman, but to the world. He’s dividing all of us. I just don’t want him on the show.”

DeGeneres is known for being an ambassador for the liberal and LGBTQA community. This past April marked the 20th Anniversary of her coming out as gay both on her sitcom and on the cover of Time Magazine. Her character Ellen Morgan on the Ellen sitcom was the first gay television character and Ellen DeGeneres is the first gay woman to host a talk-show.

This progressive standpoint of not inviting or welcoming the President of the United States on her show comes only days after fellow TV show hosts, Stephen Colbert and James Corden, came under fire for normalizing Sean Spicer’s lying to the American people by welcoming him at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards.

“I would not have him on the show,” DeGeneres continued before having to break, to more applause, “I mean look… He is who he is and he gets enough attention and he has his Twitter account and he has ways to get his message across.”

Colbert hosted the show and according to Spicer, invited the former White House Correspondent onto the Emmys; Corden took a picture kissing Spicer on the cheek after the Emmys — an act many claim invalidates all of the anti-Trump dialogue Corden has continued on his evening talk-show.

Similarly, Jimmy Fallon (host of The Tonight Show) was berated on social media for ruffling Trump’s hair when the Apprentice-host-turned-President stopped by for an interview.

Many claimed that joking around with and normalizing Trump made him seem less dangerous and widened his platform. Likewise, Saturday Night Live was accused of similar intentions when they allowed Trump to host an episode before the election.

Ellen DeGeneres’ firm refusal to give Trump a platform is a breath of fresh air in comparison to the other hosts. While the previously mentioned talk-show hosts have all continued to make fun of Trump’s administration, actions speak louder than words.

DeGeneres’ continued support of the liberal movement speaks of her consistent bravery and stubbornness that have made her a groundbreaking, inspiring trailblazer through the years.
