CNN announced Friday that Andy Cohen will become the co-host of the news network’s annual New Year Eve bash, joining long time host and best friend Anderson Cooper. CNN fired Kathy Griffin in May for participating in a photoshoot that showed her holding a mock-severed head of President Trump for which Griffin later apologized.

Griffin had been Cooper’s cohost of the network’s annual New Year’s Eve special for 10 years, but CNN released a statement calling her photoshoot “disgusting and offensive.”

Cooper, whose friendship with Griffin suffered after the photos were released, echoed CNN’s sentiments with his own statement, “For the record, I am appalled by the photo shoot Kathy Griffin took part in. It is clearly disgusting and completely inappropriate.” In August Cooper revealed that their friendship had ended due to the controversy.

Griffin’s replacement, Andy Cohen, announced his excitement for the event in a tweet in which he tagged his longtime friend and future cohost, Anderson Cooper.

“The news is out,” Cohen confirmed, “I’m co-hosting New Year’s Eve on CNN with @andersoncooper and I could not be more excited!”

Cooper and Cohen became friends over twenty years ago when a mutual friend believed they would make a great romantic pair.

In response to their blind date both men agreed that they were better suited for friendship together. “It didn’t take. It just didn’t work. We’re meant to be good friends and not boyfriends,” said Cohen.

“The news is out,” Cohen confirmed, “I’m co-hosting New Year’s Eve on CNN with @andersoncooper and I could not be more excited!”

Cooper agreed, “I imagined him gesticulating a lot. Within a few minutes, I knew we’d never date.”

While it is sad to think of Griffin being replaced due to controversial photoshoot that she apologized for, and it is disappointing to see a woman being replaced in a prime spot on television, Cohen and Cooper’s hijinks will surely be an anticipated highlight of the holiday season TV lineup and something worth looking forward to.
