A day of good news in these politically dour times comes from across the pond, in the form of former bad-boy Prince Harry confirming his engagement to American actress Meghan Markle.

Prince Harry, 33, and Meghan Markle, 36, have been dating for over a year and made their first (official) public appearance at the Toronto Invictus Games in September.

Clarence House released at statement via Twitter on Monday announcing that “His Royal Highness Prince Harry of Wales and Ms. Meghan Markle” will be wed in “Spring 2018” and that “the couple will live in Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace.”

Clarence House is the London residence of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, meaning that Prince Harry’s father was the party in charge of announcing the engagement—implying that the couple has garnered the royal seal of approval.

This approval is seen as particularly important for this couple, not only because the royals are expected to remain a tight knit family, but because of Ms. Markle’s modern background. Not only is Prince Harry’s fiancé an American woman without royal heritage but she is a divorced, older actress with a white father and a black mother.

This shakeup is an exciting look into the future of the royal family and this fresh generation of royals who seem intent on projecting inclusivity and acceptance. Prince William and Princess Kate have already crafted a reputation for having a loving family dedicated to charitable causes; most notably, the royals have joined with Prince Harry to combat stigmas surrounding mental illnesses like depression. Prince Harry has been very forthcoming about his own issues with mental health, and how the grief surrounding his mother, Princess Diana’s, death shook his life into “total chaos.”

Though that chaos led to the young prince making dubious decisions which were devoured by the media (like going to a costume party dressed up as a Nazi in his early 20’s, an incident he has commented on with much regret and many apologies); Prince Harry and his brother seem to have grown into remarkably composed and respectable gentlemen for having experienced such an unconventional childhood.

“It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got down on one knee,” Markle gushed. “As a matter of fact, I could barely let you finish proposing. I said, ‘Can I say yes now?'”

Prince Harry certainly looked the part of smitten fiancé Monday morning, as the newly engaged couple appeared utterly-in-love at a press conference at Kensington Palace, where Meghan Markle wore a white coat and displayed her beautiful engagement ring.

It has been confirmed that Prince Harry designed the three-stone diamond ring himself, through the Queen’s jewelers Cleave and Company. The big centerpiece diamond is from Botswana, where the couple have spent lots of time bonding through charity work, and the two smaller diamonds surrounding the main piece are from a brooch previously belonging to later Princess Diana.

Prince Harry explained that he decided to include some of his mom’s diamonds in the engagement ring “to make sure that she’s with us on this crazy journey together.”

And how did Prince Harry, fifth in line to the throne of England, pop the question to his American girlfriend?

Over roast chicken, of course!

The lovebirds recalled it as a “very” romantic night earlier this month in London, roasting chicken and being “cozy” together when Prince Harry proposed.

“It was so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got down on one knee,” Markle gushed. “As a matter of fact, I could barely let you finish proposing. I said, ‘Can I say yes now?'”

“There was hugs and I had the ring in my finger,” Prince Harry chuckled. “I was like, ‘Can I give you the ring?’ She goes, ‘Oh, yes! The ring!’…It was a really nice moment. It was just the two of us, and I think I managed to catch her by surprise as well.”

Once they are married Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are expected to be known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, though she may be informally referred to as Princess Meghan.

It looks like Spring 2018 is shaping up to be an exciting time for the royal family, as it is also when the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton will be expecting her third child with Prince William. Whether the next royal wedding or the next royal baby will come first has yet to be revealed.
